August 2022 – Some of the worst potholes have been filled at a cost of approximately £190.
August 2022 – With persistent chasing from Michael Tillier-Aldridge, BT removed the old, disused phone box along Stoney Common. The box was a bit of an eyesore and potentially dangerous, so it is positive step to improving the road.
December 2021 – With the ongoing situation with Covid, nothing has yet been done about further fundraising. Richard has filled in potholes periodically but these are temporary measures.
August 2020 – We are filling the potholes once again at a cost of around £300 but also seeking new quotes for permanent patching or resurfacing.
November 2019 – The drain at the bottom of Stoney Common has now been cleared and jetted at a cost of £200. The residents of the flats have paid for this. Thanks! We have also filled the main potholes at the bottom of Stoney Common and at the top of the road next to the Old Bell at a cost of around £500. There are lots of smaller holes and we’ll try and fill those too when the road is dry.
November 2019 – The drain at the bottom of Stoney Common is blocked with silt and leaves causing significant flooding. We’ve been quoted £700 to clear it professionally which seems excessive. We will be trying to dig out the silt and clear the pipes ourselves. If this doesn’t work we will call in the professionals.
October 2019 – Gigaclear have completed work on the cabling (apart from Brook View which they tell me they do not have permission to work on yet.).
May 2019 – A small working party filled in the main potholes again on 2nd May. Total cost of materials was around £250.
April 2019 – I’m delighted to say that we’ve had more information from Gigaclear who are now in a position to undertake the installation of fibre cables along Stoney Common and connected roads. THIS WORK WILL BE TAKING PLACE STARTING 9th MAY AND IS EXPECTED TO TAKE 2-3 DAYS. The BIG CHALLENGE will be to clear the roads of vehicles during the installation period which should only be a few days once dates have been set. I realise this is going to be painful but it’s essential for geting the work completed quickly.
January 2019 – Gigaclear are now finally working in our village. Yea! Work is being undertaken to install fibre around Forest Hall.
October 2018 – I’ve been following up with Gigaclear, the company due to install fibre optic broadband in Stansted over the coming months. They have confirmed that their intention is still to install cabling starting in November and the work may roll through until Q1 2019. They can’t give any more accurate dates at the moment. However, residents will receive a maildrop ‘a few weeks’ in advance of the work commencing. The work should also be logged at www.roadworks.org which tracks notifications from utility companies. I notice that Gigaclear have been working down at Sion Park on the Stansted Road near Birchanger so that appears to be a good sign! With luck, the work on our streets will be complete by early Spring and we’ll then be able to do resurfacing work. Now we just need to raise some more funds to cover the costs!
May 2018 – Residents received a letter from Gigaclear, a broadband installation provider, who are planning to install broadband cabling to streets in Stansted, commencing in September. They told us further notifications will be sent to residents as the project progresses.
March 2018 – Stansted Parish Council have confirmed that they will contribute towards the cost of resurfacing. We think this is worth about £750 towards our current target of £5000.
February 2018 – a few residents got together and filled in the worst of the potholes along Stoney Common. This was a temporary measure just to keep the road safe while funds are raised for resurfacing work.
January 2018 – Affinity Water are demanding that residents along the lower section of Stoney Common and West Road organise repairs to a water leak somewhere in the vicinity. As of 29th January we have been informed that Affinity will be repairing the leak at their expense.
January 2018 – We now have a final note from Virgin saying their plans have been cancelled and they will not be installing fibre in the foreseeable future.
June 2017 – Further emergency work was done by volunteers to fill in potholes once again, at their own expense. Thank you to those who contributed!
January 2017 – A notification was received from Virgin Media proposing the installation of fibre optic cables along the roads. This would mean digging trenches. We therefore put plans for resurfacing on hold until we could clarify when this work would take place.
March 16th 2016 – Some emergency repairs have been made to the worst of the potholes (with great thanks to those who sorted those out.) These are temporary solutions and are not expected to last more than a few months but should help while we organise fund raising and contributions from residents. Work is under way to set up banking facilities to enable contributions to be collected.
February 10th 2016 – A group of eight local residents agreed to form SCARA with the initial goal of raising funds to get the roads repaired and maintained. A Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer was appointed and SCARA discussed financing, communication tools and fundraising ideas.
January 27th 2016 – An open meeting was held at Stansted Day Centre to discuss the appalling and dangerous condition of the roads used by residents of Stoney Common, Stoney Common Road, West Road, Brook View, Brook Cottages and other areas. A Residents’ Association was proposed as a way forward to tackle important issues and several great ideas were suggested and discussed.
